Northern Iron Foundry/ Lawton Standard
The Northern Iron foundry is an industrial facility on the Eastside. It’s a large blue building that you might see when you’re driving or biking down Phalen Boulevard.
For over ten years, Northern Iron operated industrial equipment that was not listed in its air permit—a violation that led state regulators to discover illegal emissions of lead and fine particulate pollution. These pollutants pose serious health risks: lead is a known neurotoxin, and fine particulates can impact lung and heart health. Northern Iron, now renamed Lawton Standard, is currently challenging the state’s enforcement action in court while simultaneously seeking an amendment to its air permit to continue operating with the unpermitted equipment.
